U.S. Nuclear Weapons in Europe

A review of post-Cold War policy, force levels, and war planning.
This February 2005 NRDC paper pieces together evidence from an array of sources to show that the United States is still deploying 480 nuclear weapons in Europe. Until now, most observers believed there were no more than half that many still left on the continent. The continuing presence of these weapons irritates relations with Russia, undermines global efforts to dissuade other nations from developing nuclear weapons, and impedes NATO's post-Cold War evolution. The Bush administration and the NATO alliance should address this issue as a matter of global nuclear security and remove all U.S. nuclear weapons from Europe.

"The fact that the United States has some 480 nuclear weapons still stationed in Europe will come as a surprise to a lot of Europeans," said Hans M. Kristensen, the author of the report. "The big question is: 'Why are they still there more than a decade after the Cold War ended?' Neither the United States nor NATO has been able to articulate a credible mission for the weapons."

And they want to  put more there.  I think they should remove all the ones they have  there, not put more there.

I have to wonder how many they have in other countries??????? Like Australia or you know what I mean.

Every single one of them should be removed from all foreign soil. They should be forced to dimatle most of the ones they have at home as well. Over 10,000 at home.

I think their nuclear addiction is just sick.

And they have the nerve to condemn any country that want's one.

Give me a break. They are the problem!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Over 750 military bases and the list goes on and on.

Wake up World Kick them out of your countries.  What are you waiting for?  World domination.

SPECIAL REPORT, PART 1: The Deadliness Below

Weapons of mass destruction thrown into the sea years ago present danger now - and the Army doesn't know where they all are.

In the summer of 2004, a clam-dredging operation off New Jersey pulled up an old artillery shell.

These are the chemicals of warfare

Here are some of the chemical weapons that the Army dumped into the sea. The artillery rounds and steel containers that they're in are likely to be corroding and unstable. They present a deadly risk.

MUSTARD GAS

What's Off Virginia? 'There's No Guarantee'

Large quantities of chemical weapons were dumped off the state's coast. Watermen and environmentalists are fearful and demand answers.

Lurking off Virginia are tens of thousands of mustard gas shells and hundreds of tons of radioactive waste in at least five ocean dump zones created by the Army decades ago.

Of Clamshells, Artillery Shells

Mustard gas ordnance dredged from the sea was found in a driveway in the summer of 2004. Three bomb disposal experts were injured.

Homeowners have been finding military ordnance in their clamshell driveways in Delaware and Maryland for the last year.

SPECIAL REPORT, PART 2: The Deadliness Below

Overseas, fishermen have been hurt by chemical weapons the United States secretly sank, from the Riviera to Australia.

As World War II drew to a close, the Army was faced with scant storage space in ordnance depots at home and huge chemical weapons stockpiles overseas.

Navy conventional weapons dumping: Unsafe dumping

The Navy disposed of surplus rockets, bombs and other explosives at sea by blowing up ships packed with the old weapons.

A beachgoer in Rehoboth Beach walked up to a lifeguard in July with two strange objects in his hand and a stranger request on his lips.

Letters to the editor (Nov. 4, 2005): The Pentagon's response on dumping

For a half century, the United States maintained a stockpile of chemical agents and munitions for possible use in wartime. The recent Daily Press series "Special report: The deadliness below" did not emphasize that today the U.S. Army is eliminating this arsenal in safe and environmentally responsible ways.

House to probe chemical dumping

Congress looks at the Army's dumping of chemical weapons in the sea. Other countries and environmentalists want answers as well.

Federal lawmakers are demanding the Army reveal everything it knows about where it dumped chemical weapons into the world's oceans, as well as provide proof the munitions won't leak and cause an environmental catastrophe.

Dredging up a long-buried secret

The Army will study a chemical weapon inadvertently brought ashore to assess risks of ocean dumps.

The Army hopes to learn more about the risks from ocean-dumped chemical weapons by testing and dismantling an artillery shell filled with mustard agent that was dredged up in October off the coast of New Jersey.

DOD orders Army to find dumpsites

A high-ranking official promises a comprehensive effort to locate long-lost chemical weapons.

The military is plowing through old records to find any and all information on the Army's ocean dumping of chemical weapons decades ago, a high priority effort to determine where they all are located and what danger they pose today.

More lies from Livermore nuclear weapons lab

San Francisco – “Hundreds of thousands of additional deaths and maimings is the Bay Area’s thanks for being good neighbors to these the ‘good Germans,’ the desk murderers, who are just following orders,” stated Pat Gray, long time San Francisco Bay Area resident and former Green candidate for Congress.

“A group of citizens of the Bay Area are seeking a lawyer to take legal action to stop the open air explosions set off by Livermore Lab in Tracy, California,” she announced. “These open air explosions are sending clouds of depleted uranium oxide gas all over the Bay Area. It is well know that depleted uranium gas is a carcinogen and causes serious birth defects.

“Our nation has signed a treaty to stop doing nuclear explosions in the open air – but this is what Livermore Lab is doing and has been for the last 46 years. Now they have the hubris to request permission to increase the number of explosions. We hope that with legal assistance we can force the testing to be done underground.”

For the rest……….

Under ground or underwater testing can be just a dangerous as air testing.  Air testing is illegal. If they do these test and put their own people in danger, the rest of the planet is also in danger. When they kill their own they have no problem killing anyone anywhere.

While I am at it here are a few other things to consider. Bunker Busters could have created an Earth quake

Triggering of Landslides, Tsunamis and Earthquakes
At least one major test-related landslide and consequent Tsunami in Moruroa, on July 25, 1979. Apparently, the 120kiloton weapon, which was supposed to be lowered into a shaft of 800 meters, got stuck at a depth of 400 meters and could not be dislodged. The French authorities decided to explode the device anyway. This explosion resulted in a major underwater landslide of at least one million cubic meters of coral and rock and created a cavity, probably 140 meters in diameter. The underwater landslide produced a major tidal wave comparable to a tsunami, which spread through the Tuamotu Archipelago and injured people on the southern part of Moruroa Atoll. (27)
French authorities initially denied that any mishap had occurred and declared that the tidal wave was of natural origin, but in a publication in 1985 they did acknowledge "the accident of 25 July 1979"

Downwinders is a research and educational foundation started by former downwind resident of southwest Utah, and formally established in 1978 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Downwinders takes its name from the residents living in the prevailing wind pattern surrounding the Nevada Test Site, and who have been constantly exposed to radioactive fallout from America's nuclear testing activities conducted there. Downwinders was founded with two primary goals:

  • To expose the plight of downwind residents whose fallout exposures have caused cancers, leukemia, and other illnesses, and to obtain justice for their injuries.
  • To fight for an immediate end to all nuclear testing at the Nevada Test Site and elsewhere.
